Koi Gill Biopsy - USA Koi

Have a look at a gill biopsy up close.

Not necessarily for the squeamish but I think if you own koi you should own a microscope or at least know where to borrow one and how to use it.

Gently Open the Gill Cover.

Using 115mm, straight, iris, scissors or 115mm, straight, dissecting, scissors snip a small piece of gill lamella for microscopic examination.

Oil of cloves or MS 222 can be used to anaesthetize the koi for easier handling.

Gently Hold Open and Snip.
Hold, Snip, Remove.

Not necessarily for the squeamish but I think if you own koi you should own a microscope or at least know where to borrow one and how to use it.

Koi & Pond Tip of the Day
May 16th, 2008
Filters that have not had water circulating through them for the winter should be cleaned well before turning the pump back on this spring. Cleaning will remove toxins that can develop from waste breaking down in the filter in the absence of oxygen. Once your filter is up and running, seed it with beneficial bacteria.
