Shop Pond/Polyurea Spray LinerPublished:
We recently started to install polyurea spray on pond liner. It gives a seamless installation without any wrinkles, gathers or folds. Debris have a way of getting trapped in the folds of a liner and can turn into harmful pockets of parasites and bacteria.
We have a small display pond at our shop that has had a leak in it since we installed it. When it was installed I tried a roll on type of liner which I didn't apply correctly and it caused a leak. I repaired it several times to limp through the season but it eventually had to be replaced. Here are some pictures and descriptions of how we applied the new polyurea spray on liner.

Because this pond was already half finished all I had to do was remove the exsisting liner material. After this I wanted to raise the water level which I did by adding some block to the top edge of the exsisting block collar. I also added a Koitoilet II airated bottom drain and a tangential pond return.
In this pond the cinder block collar that you see and concrete bottom don't really provide much in the way of structure but more in the way of a smooth surface for the polyurea to adhere to. It is thick enough to walk on without cracking but it might crack during a freeze thaw cycle.

This is where the skimmer was positioned but because I wanted to raise up the water level I had to remove it and redo some of the concrete.

We used a Savio Skimmer but we altered it so it would pull from the bottom of the skimmer. We also installed an overflow inside the skimmer as well.

As you can see from the picture there is already a pond return but I wanted to add another one to give some current and direction. I knocked out part of the block to fit the Tangential Pond Return (TPR).

I used 2 in PVC flex pipe to plumb the TPR.

Glued and positioned in place it just needs to be pulled into the block.

Set and mortered into place. After the polyurea is sprayed it will be seamless and smooth.

I didn't take any pictures of the re-plumb of the Koitoilet II bottom drain but here it is installed.

All of the prep is finished at this point. I have the Savio Skimmer, Koitoilet II Bottom Drain and Tangential Pond Return (TPR) all set and ready to be sprayed with the Polyurea.

I have masked off most everything and I've started to spray the polyurea.

We put down a few light coats and let it build up from there.

It is almost finished. Now when we spray a pond we spray a light color and then we spray the black. This helps to find any pin holes or imperfections in the finish.

It is hard to see the TPRs now because they were masked over and covered with the polyurea spray.

One last shot and then I start on the stone bench sitting area.
